Laser for Fungal Nails Q & A

What is laser treatment for nail fungus?

Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that often affects the toenails. Signs and symptoms of toenail fungus include changes in the color and texture of your nail. In addition to cosmetic concerns, fungal nail infections can cause toe pain and foot pain.

Traditional treatments for fungal nail infections include topical and oral antifungal medications. However, these treatments are ineffective for many people with toenail fungus.

The expert team at Oklahoma Foot and Ankle Institute uses Q-Clear, a noninvasive, state-of-the-art medical laser that treats fungal infections without harming the healthy tissues of your foot.

How does a laser treat nail fungus?

The Q-Clear laser uses a specific wavelength of light energy (1064 nm) that targets fungal infections. The device sends laser pulses into your foot, which destroy invading fungus without damaging your skin or surrounding tissues.

Because the 1064 nm wavelength is gentle on normal tissues, Q-Clear laser therapy typically involves no pain during or after treatment. Unlike many prescription medications for fungal nail infections, Q-Clear has no known side effects.

How effective is laser treatment for nail fungus?

The FDA-approved Q-Clear laser is safer and more effective than other toenail fungus treatments. Clinical research shows that only two treatments with the Q-Clear laser kills toenail fungus in 95.4% of patients. Other lasers may require multiple follow-up treatments to achieve this effect.

What should I expect from laser treatment for nail fungus?

First, your Oklahoma Foot and Ankle Institute podiatrist carefully examines your foot and reviews your medical history. They may collect a tissue scraping or nail clipping for lab testing to determine the type of fungal infection you have.

After they confirm your diagnosis, your podiatrist discusses your treatment options. Q-Clear laser therapy is most effective for patients with mild-to-moderate fungal nail infections. If your condition is severe, they may recommend surgical treatment.

Q-Clear laser treatment is noninvasive and pain-free. Your treatment should be over in about a half an hour, after which you are free to resume normal activities right away. Most people notice improvement after just one treatment, but individual results may vary. Complete nail bed recovery can take 9-12 months.
